Welcome to all those who are considering settling in the Lanaudière region. This region is one of the most beautiful in Quebec and offers an exceptional quality of life. Lydia Soczniew and Sylvain Leclerc, RE/MAX real estate brokers, would like to guide you in exploring this beautiful region and, more specifically, the municipality of Saint-Calixte.
Is the city of Saint-Calixte a destination of choice?
Yes! Saint-Calixte is an ideal destination for those seeking to reconnect with nature and discover the rustic landscapes, dense forests, as well as the many lakes (there are more than 25) and rivers of the region. Located less than 45 minutes from Montreal/Laval, this municipality is easily accessible for people living or working in the Montreal urban community. Living in Saint-Calixte offers the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful lifestyle in the middle of nature while acquiring a single-family home at a very affordable cost compared to the big cities.
6,792 people have chosen to make their home in this territory of 146.71 km2, up 12.3% since 2016. According to Mayor Michel Jasmin, the demographic growth of the population (seasonal or full-time residential) will continue over the years while land sales are currently exploding in Saint-Calixte.
Do you know the history of Saint-Calixte?
Founded on July 1, 1855, St. Calixtus was named after the late Pope and Bishop of Rome, Calixtus I. The territory of St. Calixtus was first settled by the Irish and was known as the Township of Kilkenny. At the municipal level, the territory was first part of the municipality of Saint-Lin from 1845 to 1847. In 1855, the municipality of the Township of Kilkenny was created. It was not until 1954 that the municipality adopted the name of Saint-Calixte.
The city and the region have experienced significant economic growth throughout their history, thanks to their proximity to waterways (the Achigan River, from the Cree word manashigan, and the Beauport River) which have allowed for the development of agriculture, forestry and recreational tourism. Today, the city is a prime tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but it is also a
Today, the city is a prime tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but it also preserves its rich agricultural and forestry heritage. The people who live here are called Calixtians.
Which is better: living in the city or in the country?
There is no universal answer to the question of whether city or country living is better for quality of life. "It all depends on individual preferences and priorities. The important thing is to think carefully about your needs, your priorities and your financial situation before making a decision," says Sylvain Leclerc, Saint-Calixte real estate broker with RE/MAX Prestige.
What are the advantages of living in the city?
- Accessibility: Public transportation is generally more developed in cities, making it easier to get around.
- Employment: Employment opportunities are often more plentiful in urban areas, with a greater number of businesses and organizations.
- Services and infrastructure: Cities offer easier access to services such as hospitals, schools and shopping.
- Cultural life: Cities often have a rich cultural life, with museums, theaters, concerts and festivals.
- Diversity: Cities tend to be more cosmopolitan and offer the opportunity to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds.
- Education: Universities and colleges are often located in cities, providing easier access to higher education.
However, it is important to note that city living can also have its drawbacks, such as high cost of living, pollution and noise.
What are the advantages of living in the country?
- Nature: The countryside offers a more peaceful and green environment, with easy access to nature and outdoor activities.
- Less pollution: Rural areas generally have less air and noise pollution, which is considered beneficial to health and well-being.
- Space: Homes in the country often offer more space, both indoors and outdoors, allowing for a garden or large yard.
- Cost of living: The cost of living in the country is often lower than in cities, with rents and real estate prices generally more affordable.
- Community: Rural communities are often smaller and tighter-knit, which can foster close relationships and a sense of belonging.
- Less stress: Living in the country can be less stressful than urban life, with the pace of life often slower and more relaxed.
However, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks of living in the country, such as limited access to certain services, businesses and employment opportunities. Some people to experience social isolation. "However, in the case of Saint-Calixte and many other towns in the Lanaudière region, living near forests and lakes does not take you away from shops, professional services and community organizations," says Lydia Soczniew, RE/MAX real estate broker in Saint-Calixte.
In fact, there are two elementary schools, access to the Sainte-Julienne high school, and the neighbouring municipalities are home to English schools administered by the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board. Moreover, did you know that you can count on the public transportation services of the MRC de Montcalm to ensure your travels on the territory and even outside? If you live in one of the ten municipalities/city of the MRC de Montcalm and you are a member, you can benefit from three types of transportation: public, adapted and regional.
Is it a dynamic and growing city?

water games for toddlers, a double tennis court, a skateboard park, a basketball court, a petanque game and a recreation chalet. The St. Calixte Recreation and Community Life Department ensures that citizens have fun activities throughout the year. In the summer, people are even invited to come and move in the parks between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. A summer and winter day camp is available for children aged 5 to 12.

In all seasons, the mountain trails welcome many people to enjoy the wonders of nature while practicing horseback riding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, all-terrain vehicles and motorcycle riding.
Why buy a house in Saint-Calixte?
It's a great opportunity to build financial wealth. When asked why buying a home is central to a family's financial independence, experienced real estate broker Lydia Soczniew said:
"Buying a home is often a big goal for families because it gives them a home and helps them feel financially independent. In fact, when you have a house, you're not paying rent anymore, you're paying a mortgage, and once you're done, you don't have to worry about that big expense. Plus, the value of your home can increase over time, and that's a bonus for your financial security. That's basically why buying a home is super important for family financial independence!"
In pursuit of this goal of financial independence, what's particularly attractive is the price of single-family homes, which is more affordable than in larger cities. This is true for St. Calixte and many other cities in the region. According to Centris, the median price of single-family homes in February 2023 was $257,500. At this price, there are surely good opportunities on the resale market: the median price is half that of several cities popular with young families and young couples (Blainville and Mascouche, among others) and almost three times lower than a family home in Montreal.
Note 1: The median sales price is the one that separates all transactions into two equal parts: half of the transactions were made at a lower price and half at a higher price.
Note2 : The statistical data presented on this page provides an overall picture of the real estate market in a given area, but is not a reflection of each individual property. To obtain an estimate of the market value of your property, contact Lydia Soczniew or Sylvain Leclerc: 450-944-6661 or 450-944-1923 . Thanks to their training and their advanced tools, they will be able to perform a comparative market analysis in order to establish the right price.
Conclusion: Living in a country/mountain environment with a good real estate purchase: it's rather interesting, isn't it? However, it is important to note that buying a house is not a choice for everyone. The costs of buying and maintaining a home can be high, and it's important to be prepared for these costs before making a decision. In addition, the real estate market can be volatile and the value of the property can change significantly over time. This is why it is important to use real estate professionals like Lydia Soczniew and Sylvain Leclerc who have over 30 years of experience in managing real estate transactions.
